Ohara Koson (1877-1945) is regarded as one of the most important Japanese print makers of the late 19th, early 20th century. Part of the shin-hanga (“new prints”) movement, Koson was a master of kacho-e (prints of birds-and-flowers).
“Snipe drinking” and “Lapwing behind reeds”, Taisho period, early 20th century, show Koson’s talent for the depiction of birds and flowers. The exceptional level of detail, rendering of textures and the overall composition is masterful.
